For the ancient Greeks, the Acheron was the border between the living and the dead: Charon ferried souls across these very waters. On its banks stood the Necromanteion, the oracle of the dead, where pilgrims came to speak with lost loved ones — you can still visit its ruins, twenty minutes from the springs.
Then you step into the gorge, and the “river of woe” turns out to be alive, cold and impossibly clear. That contrast — myth above, springs below — is why people come back changed.
Ápeiros is what the ancients called this whole land: “the boundless.” They weren't wrong — and that's the name we chose.
